What’s happening now :)
Well, right now I’m updating this page that has fallen into some archeological layer of todo. Yeah, it has been 4 years since the previous update.
This update would not be happening except for a nudge from Derek. Props to Derek for taking the time to keep this a bit more lively.
What’s happening today?
Well, for the most part I’m engaged in an lengthy, ongoing pivot.
This pivot may take a year or two. I’m taking it step by step so that opportunities and lessons have the space to express themselves and be processed.
What is this pivot?
I pretty much live my life based on the following three lines:
- Delighted to be here.
- Glad to be of service.
- What can I do to help?
That last line is where the pivot is happening.
My macular degeneration is starting to kick in. When it comes to helping, a great deal of the work I’ve been up to has involved vision. Many of those things can continue — only differently. Differently abled is not just a politically correct way to say disability. For me “differently abled” is a kind of swiss-army knife mantra — applying in many different ways.
I’ll demonstrate some of the ways this mantra works in my head.
Dis-abled translates to “un able” or “not able”. I will always be able in some form. That’s a fact. However, I am definitely becoming differently abled.
The phrase “differently abled” suggests a treasure hunt. Yeah, what other able-ness is on the horizon? A pivot is always from one thing to another. So, what is the new “other”? Could be something I have which will need to come more center stage. Or, perhaps this new “other” will be a surprise — something truly new for me, or perhaps just under appreciated. The point here is that the phrase “differently abled” prompts me to move my focus from what I am pivoting away from toward what I am pivoting toward.
