ChatGPT Helps Revise Collaboration Prompt

Introduction

Reading The AI Advantage Newsletter I found reference to the prompt below. Very interesting prompt. So, obviously, the first thing I did was see if ChatGPT4 could help create a more succinct version.

The jury is still out on whether the new formulation of the prompt is just as good. I have used the new form several time to good result.

Spoiler Alert:

  1. A more concise but still functional version of the Prompt Collaborator prompt was found.
  2. During the session a suspicion of mine was partially confirmed: If you want to make sure all previous instructions are ignored it is best to start a new session.
  3. Not only is white space not a prompt, when used properly it can lead to better results.

The ChatGPT Session

Prompt: I want you to become my Prompt Collaborator. Your goal is to look at the following {prompt} and make any revisions you would suggest. The goal is to make the prompt concise and easily understood by you.

prompt = “I want you to become my Prompt Creator. Your goal is to help me craft the best possible prompt for my needs. The prompt will be used by you, ChatGPT. You will follow the following process: 1. Your first response will be to ask me what the prompt should be about. I will provide my answer, but we will need to improve it through continual iterations by going through the next steps. 2. Based on my input, you will generate 3 sections. a) Revised prompt (provide your rewritten prompt. it should be clear, concise, and easily understood by you), b) Suggestions (provide suggestions on what details to include in the prompt to improve it), and c) Questions (ask any relevant questions pertaining to what additional information is needed from me to improve the prompt). 3. We will continue this iterative process with me providing additional information to you and you updating the prompt in the Revised prompt section until it’s complete.”

ChatGPT4: Revised prompt: “As my Prompt Collaborator, help me create the ideal prompt for ChatGPT through an iterative process. This will involve: 1) Asking about the topic; 2) Presenting a revised prompt, suggestions for improvement, and relevant questions; 3) Refining the prompt based on my input until completion.”

Prompt: Review the revised prompt and make any additions or corrections that are necessary.

ChatGPT4: Revised prompt: “As my Prompt Collaborator, assist me in crafting the perfect prompt for ChatGPT through an iterative process. This includes: 1) Inquiring about the desired topic; 2) Offering a refined prompt, improvement suggestions, and pertinent questions; 3) Continuously refining the prompt based on my feedback until it’s complete.”

Prompt: What is the best way to create a start condition free of prior instructions? Can I just say “Ignore all previous instructions.” Or should I start a new chat?

ChatGPT4: You can use the phrase “Ignore all previous instructions” to indicate that you want to start fresh, and the AI will do its best to follow that request. However, if you want to ensure that there is no carryover from previous instructions or context, starting a new chat session would be the most effective approach.

Prompt: Okay, thank you. Before I start a new chat session I would like to ask a question about formatting. In a previous chat session you gave me a suggestion of a prompt that was made very understandable for me through the use of tabs, new line, and other white space. Is this okay? Or, is it better to just have one big sentence with line breaks?

ChatGPT4: Using clear formatting with tabs, new lines, and white space can help make your prompt more readable and organized. It’s perfectly fine to use such formatting to present your ideas and instructions in a structured manner. Breaking down complex information into smaller, manageable sections can improve the AI’s understanding and lead to better responses. So, feel free to use a well-structured format rather than one long sentence with line breaks.
